Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, but the big ones usually steal the spotlight. They’re labeled as brave, strong, and the classic “man’s best friend.” Meanwhile, small dogs often get stuck with the “purse pet” tag—like they’re an accessory or something, not a real friend.
Big Personalities in Tiny Packages.
Let’s toss out these tired ideas and talk about what makes small dogs so lovable and full of personality. They’re Great Danes in their heads, we know that. Their hearts are just as big as their bodies are small. Some folks think that if a dog’s small, it must be shy or lack spunk. That’s just not true.
Little dogs are loaded with personality. Most have enough confidence to fill a room. My own sidekick Moe, a pint-sized ball of fur, is proof. He struts around like he owns the place—long-haired tail in the air like a dune buggy antenna, eyes sparkling, always ready for action.
Breeds like Chihuahuas bring a boldness that could rival any heavyweight. Moe is, after all half Chihuahua.
Jack Russell Terriers, with their boundless energy and sharp wit, can outplay dogs twice their size. These small pups form deep bonds and show fierce devotion to their people. They’re as smart as whips and that has nothing to do with size. Their energy levels approach superhero levels. Don’t you wish we could channel these wonders of caninedom?
Little Skull, Big Brain
Small dogs love to learn and impress, often mastering new tricks before the big guys have figured out what’s going on. Ruh-roh!
Blogs containing instructions for training will be posted soon. Check back with us.
Pomeranians, for example, pick up commands quickly and enjoy testing their smarts with games and puzzles. Little dogs shine in activities that keep their minds busy, like agility courses or interactive toys. Give them the right kind of training and mental challenge, and their intelligence really stands out.
Snuggle Bear, Bug, Monkey…
Small dogs have perfected the art of snuggling… right? Don’t even try to tell me you’ve never called your dinky dog, Snuggle Bear or Snuggle Bug or Snuggle Monkey. I simply won’t believe you. 😜
Their size makes them ideal lap dogs, always ready to curl up for a cozy nap or watch a movie with you.
Moe’s always the first to claim his spot when we sit down. I’m glad he has his own spot, otherwise I might sit on him. Oh, ‘we’ is me and Andre’, my honey. Andre’ is Moe’s #2. ;)
Don’t let their size fool you—these little pups care deeply and know just when you need a friend. It’s amazing all the love they hold fits in those little bodies. If I have a crying spell, guess who’s headed my way before a tear hits my T-shirt.
Breeds like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Shih Tzu are known for their loving nature and can instantly lift your mood with a tail wag or a gentle nudge.
Tiny but Fierce Defenders
Think small dogs can’t protect their homes? Think again. Yorkies, Miniature Schnauzers, and even toy breeds take guarding duties seriously. They might not look intimidating, but they make up for it with sharp hearing, bold voices, and a strong sense of loyalty.
Moe once scared off a delivery person with his cartoon bark—he thinks he’s a security guard. Shhh, don’t tell him he’s not. Before ya know it he’ll wanna paycheck. ;)
Adventurers at Heart
Some people think small dogs are too fragile for the outdoors. But most small breeds crave adventure.
They love sniffing out new trails, digging at the beach, or simply joining you on a walk around the block.
Moe has short legs, but he can outpace me when he smells something fun. He’s not good on a leash, but he tears around the yard like he’s driving a NASCAR car.
Dogs like Dachshunds and French Bulldogs may not run marathons, but they still need regular walks and playtime to stay happy.
Training with a Smile
Let’s not assume small dogs are easier to train than larger breeds. It takes patience and consistency, same as with their larger cousins. They respond well to treats, praise, and clear rules.
Moe learned “sit” in a day—probably thanks to his love of snacks. Peanut Butter Paws for Dinky Dogs are available in My Ten Pound Hound bakery, which is conveniently located here on the site for your shopping ease and pleasure. I used those to train him to sit.
After positive training and, small dogs show off their good manners and ability to quickly learn new routines. Your little one will be the envy of every pup in the neighborhood!
The Joy of Small Dogs
Small dogs bring a lot to the table. They’re bold, smart, loving, and ready for anything. The idea that they’re less “dog” than their bigger friends couldn’t be more wrong. They’re Dobermans in their heads, but fill our lives with laughter, comfort, and loyalty in small, adogable doses. Shhh, we won’t tell them they’re not YUGE.
Moe and all his small dog pals prove that the best companions come in every size. Next time you see a little dog strutting down the street or curling up in someone’s lap, remember: their size might be small, but their spirit is large. Small dogs bring big joy, and life wouldn’t be the same without them.
