“I have found that when you are deeply troubled, there are things you get from the silent devoted companionship of a dog that you can get from no other source.” — Doris Day
My Ten Pound Hound Blog & Bakery exist because I want to protect little dogs like yours.
Blog and Bakery were created in memory of my Charlie. After he choked on a treat, I promised him I'd make safer snacks for small pups.
You might’ve had an experience with your small dog swallowing a bone or chew toy, before it was ready to go ‘down the hatch’. I don’t think I have to tell you how fast panic sets in when you realize your baby is in trouble. If I do, here goes: It’s the most helpless feeling ever.
I glanced over just at the moment Charlie fell over on his side. At first, I didn’t know what was going on. I felt that rush of panic that’s like fire starting at your feet, then moving quickly toward your head.
I realized the chew bone I gave him was chewed down to a size he instinctively processed as “swallowable”. Not so much. The diameter of the bone matched the diameter of his throat and when he swallowed, the bone shifted and closed off his breathing.
The first thing I tried was gentle chest squeezing. My minding was whirling, I’m crying… tears running down my face. I prayed.
Compressions weren’t working. Naturally, my adrenaline kicked in. I thrust two of my fingers into his mouth, thinking I could use them as kind of a flesh tweezer to pull the bone out.
I know my Charlie was in a panic also. His reflexes forced him to chomp down. I saw a trickle of blood run down my hand. First blush, I thought I had injured my precious boy. I soon realized my finger was caught up in the hinge of his jaw. It broke the skin. I collected my thoughts and refocused.
In a moment of clarity, I figured I’d try pushing the bone.
Aha! It worked. My little guy gave a little cough, got back on his feet and came toward me. His Min Pin nub of a tail wagging.
I was so grateful I didn’t lose him to something like choking on an object that was intended to reward him.
Now, I bake tiny, fresh treats for breeds like Chihuahuas, Yorkies, and Frenchies. Oh, and Miniature Pinschers, of course! Every size is made for little mouths—no need to break them up or worry about your best friend choking.
Charlie crossed “The Bridge” years ago, but not because he choked on a dog treat that was too large or too hard. :(
I craft each treat, one at a time, by hand. Baking and cooking from scratch are passions of this old-fashioned gal. That term has, for some reason, picked up a bad rap. I don’t agree in all situations. Some things are better left alone. Doing things the way they’ve always been done can be a good thing. That’s why your pup is in for a basic, old-fashioned, homemade treat. If you long for simplicity, My Ten Pound Hound Blog and Bakery is your new spot.
My treats are named after my beloved MinPins… Charlie, Brandy and Tuco. No “big” cookies, no frosting, just simple, natural ingredients.
No need to break treats, so your paws won’t hurt because the treat’s too hard or too large. These basic goodies are peanut butter flavored. Nothing fancy. Most dogs love peanut butter.
If your pup has allergies, you will like the short ingredient list. Peanut and peanut butter allergies are uncommon in dogs. You can e mail me about other flavors. I’ll be honored to create a special package for your pooch.
You’re busy, I know. That’s why my process includes pre-orders only. In other words, you could call it ON DEMAND baking ;) There’s a ‘not old-fashioned’ term I’m throwing in for ya, for good measure. Demand a movie… why not demand a fresh bag of dog treats?
Here’s the process: You tell me what you want, I bake… your pup enjoys fresh treats. Super simple.
There are no preservatives or fillers—only treats you can trust. I recommend refrigeration because of that, but you needn’t worry about spoilage.
I bake batches for Moe, then freeze them. They can be refrigerated for a couple of weeks if not longer. Never had any of them spoil. Still, I don’t want you to purchase treats that have been in my freezer for who knows how long. You order, I bake. Fresher than a farmers market also.
Bigger isn’t always better, doesn’t just apply to dog size. My signature 1 oz. Backpack Bag is perfect for walks or trips to the park. Easy to throw in your purse, or… hmm… backpack. Get it? I offer larger sized bags also. Check out the Bakery page for more information. Your little one might just need a larger supply of treats.
My Ten Pound Hound bakery is my tribute to Charlie, Tuco, Brandy and my Chihuahua/Pekingese Moe, who keeps me company while I bake. You know he’s my taste tester. When we take a break we like to soak up some rays. He’s in the photo at the top of this page… the furry one on the left. ;)
Part of my objective for creating a local bakery alongside a blog is to make life a little easier for you, while you care for your baby.
My blog is a tribute to and digital guidebook for all of us out there who love the little ones.
I keep you in mind during my research and writing of the post in this blog. We’ve never met, but we have a bond simply because we are the ones chosen to care for small dogs.
I take joy in learning and sharing, for and with you. :)
💕
While preparing for my late father’s funeral service, Pastor Meg shared something her husband had said about small dogs. He said, “They’re cats that bark.” I remember thinking how she gave our grief a needed, albeit brief break. My Mom and brother both cracked a smile.
Now, I’m not ready to look at our cherished small breeds as cats, I just know our teeny pups provide love, companionship and yes, humor to us all. And. We know dogs are way better than cats. :)
When you read my weekly blog, you’ll find updates on health care, treat tips, and product finds for your little angel. Thanks for supporting small dogs, (especially rescue dogs) and homemade treats. I hope my snacks bring joy to you and your pup.
